The practice of oral and maxillofacial pathology includes research, diagnosis of diseases using clinical, radiographic, microscopic, biochemical or other examinations, and in many instances the management of patients, most typically for oral cancer.

Examination of the mouth may show a visible lesion of the lip, tongue or other area and if left untreated the lesion may become ulcerated and bleed. Complications may include difficulty talking, chewing, or swallowing especially if these lesions are on the tongue.

Surgical removal of these lesions is typically recommended. in this instances where the lesion is found to be malignant radiation therapy is used in conjunction with the surgery and reconstructive surgery may be needed to produce acceptable cosmetic and functional results after surgery.

Various techniques such as bone grafts or surgical flaps may be used to help rebuild structures removed during excision of these lesions.
