Use of Platelet Rich Plasma allows your body to take advantage of healing at an accelerated rate. Platelets release growth factors into the wound by releasing growth factors to assist the body in repairing itself. The more growth factors released into the wound, the more efficiently and quickly the body will heal.
PRP has been a significant development in formation of new bone for dental implants as it allows bone to grow not only more predictably but faster as well.
Because PRP is a by-product of your own blood, disease transmission is not an issue, it can be done in our office while you are having your surgical procedure, you need not incur the additional financial burden of requesting harvesting at a hospital or a blood bank since the quantity needed is minimal (55 cc's), and being easy to handle, PRP helps make the application of bone grafting materials easier to use.
PRP is not required in many cases of bone grafting; however, it is beneficial in wound healing. PRP must be mixed with bone to stimulate bone formation and has been found to increase the final amount of bone that is present after healing. It is important to understand your insurance will not cover the costs associated with this treatment and also that there are certain patients who do not qualify for this procedure. We will discuss your options based on your medical history before determining if PRP is right for you.
