What is an abscess? An abscess is an accumulation of bacteria, commonly known as pus, under the gum or around the tooth. An abscess is a sign of a bacterial infection which is caused by food entrapment, poor oral hygiene, saliva and other bacteria in the mouth. Symptoms of an abscess include throbbing pain in the area, foul taste, sensitivity to cold or hot food, fever and pain when touching the area.
