Pre-prosthetic surgery in South Florida

A denture is only as good as the foundation it sits on. After teeth are lost, the underlying bone and gum tissue can be uneven, sharp, or shaped in a way that makes a denture rock, pinch, or rub. Pre-prosthetic surgery corrects those issues before the prosthesis is made, so the final result is stable and comfortable.

Dr. Ramon Perez-Rosich is board-certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and has practiced in South Florida since 2007. He coordinates closely with your restorative dentist on timing and the final result.

When it is needed

Your dentist may recommend pre-prosthetic surgery if you have:

  • An uneven or sharp bony ridge after extractions
  • Excess or loose gum tissue that interferes with a denture
  • Bony prominences (tori) that get in the way of a prosthesis
  • Insufficient ridge height or width to support a stable denture
  • Plans for dental implants that require ridge preparation first

Common procedures

Alveoloplasty (ridge smoothing)

Reshaping and smoothing the bony ridge after teeth are removed, so a denture rests evenly. Often done at the same time as extractions.

Tori removal

Removal of benign bony growths (tori) on the palate or lower jaw that interfere with a prosthesis.

Soft-tissue recontouring

Removing or reshaping excess or loose gum tissue so the denture seats properly.

Ridge preservation and augmentation

Preserving or rebuilding bone after extraction to maintain a foundation for a future denture or implant. This may involve bone grafting.

Frequently asked questions

Is this done before or after extractions?

Often at the same time as extractions, which avoids a second surgery. In other cases it is staged after healing. We will plan the sequence at your consult.

How long is recovery?

Most patients recover from minor ridge work in one to two weeks. We will give you a timeline specific to your procedure.

Will my insurance cover it?

Some dental and medical plans cover portions, particularly when it is part of preparing for a prosthesis. We verify your benefits before treatment.
